Painted by Ernst Haeckel. The painting portrays 12 different kinds of hummingbirds, mostly from South America and one (upper left) from North America. Hackel chose this variety of hummingbirds for his composition probably to illustrate big variety of peaks, tail feathers etc. to support Darwin’s theory which was new at the time.
