Early 18th century illustration by Maria Sibylla Merian, a successful painter and passionate amateur biologist. As a woman and an amateur she didn’t get full respect of contemporary science community, but free from its bondage she worked in a more progressive way observing insects directly, and with her art she made a huge impact with popularizing her findings. Her book on butterflies of Surinam widely popularized knowledge about insect's metamorphosis from an egg to caterpillar to butterfly. She made the illustrations on her 2 year unofficial expedition to Surinam. She funded the expedition on her own with selling her paintings.
